Privacy Policy
The short version
- No accounts, no ads, no tracking, no analytics.
- Your trips live on your devices and in your own iCloud. We don't run a server that receives them, and we can't see them.
- To suggest places, Wayside sends map locations (not your name or trips) to Apple Maps, OpenStreetMap and Wikipedia.
- Only the people you invite can see a trip you share.
What Wayside keeps, and where
Everything you put in Wayside stays on your device: trips, places and plans, the people on a trip (names, age groups and interests you enter), bookings and costs, receipt photos, funding sources, and places you've hidden.
If you're signed in to iCloud, Wayside stores this in your private iCloud database so it's on all your Apple devices, and keeps your settings (home, your people, interests, mileage rate) in iCloud too. That storage belongs to your Apple ID and is covered by Apple's Privacy Policy. We have no access to it.
Some things never leave the device: suggestions Wayside has looked up, its cache of nearby places, and places you've marked "not now".
Sharing a trip
When you share a trip, Apple's iCloud sharing makes it available to the people you invite. They can see and edit everything on that trip, including its people, costs and receipts. You can see who has access and stop sharing at any time; someone you invited can leave the trip. Deleting a trip you shared removes it for everyone.
Location
Wayside asks for your location only while you're using it, for Near you, for suggestions near where you are, and for "Use current location" when you set your home. It's used to find places to suggest. You can turn it off in Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Wayside; everything else keeps working.
Looking up places
To find things worth doing, Wayside sends a map location (yours, or a place on your trip) and what kind of places to look for to these services:
- Apple Maps, for searches, addresses, directions and places. Apple Maps & Privacy
- OpenStreetMap, through the public Overpass API (overpass-api.de). OSMF Privacy Policy
- Wikipedia, for nearby articles. Wikimedia Privacy Policy
These requests don't include your name, your trips or the people on them. Like any website, these services see your device's internet address when it connects.
Links you tap (a place's website, Google Maps, Wikipedia, a visitor bureau search) open outside Wayside and follow that site's own policy.
Camera and receipts
The camera is used only to scan receipts when you choose to. Wayside reads the receipt on your device; the photo and what it reads are saved with your trip as described above.
Wayside Plus
Wayside Plus is bought through the App Store. Apple handles the payment; we never see your payment details. Wayside only checks with the App Store whether Plus is active for your Apple ID or your Family Sharing group.
Children
Wayside is a family app, and there are no accounts. What it knows about children is what a parent enters (a name, an age group, interests), and that stays on your devices and in your iCloud as described above. We don't collect information from children.
Deleting your information
Delete a trip in Wayside and it's removed from your devices and your iCloud. To remove everything, delete the app and then, on an iPhone, go to Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Account Storage → Wayside → Delete Data.
Changes
If Wayside starts getting place data from a server we run, that server will be asked for map areas, not for anything about you, and this page will be updated before that ships. When this policy changes, the date at the top changes too.
